Where To Go In August
From Scandinavian city break ideas and restaurants with rooms in the UK countryside to our favorite new Alpine summer destinations, here’s our edit of the best places to go this month.
East Coast, US
Come August, New Yorkers and Bostonites leave the city in search of sandy beaches, Atlantic waves, and cooler temperatures. This August, we’ve got our sights set on Nantucket, where the stylish Greydon House is located. Inspired by the island’s history, its classic rooms are fit for a well-traveled captain with antique furniture, Indian block print bed linens, and the occasional playful detail. Spend your days exploring Nantucket’s rugged coastline and endless secret beaches, bookended with doses of history, art, and architecture.

Or closer to the Big Apple, book in at Sunset Beach Hotel, Andre Balazs’ relaxed spot on Shelter Island. Copenhagen, Denmark
If summer city breaks are more your vibe, Copenhagen is a glorious choice for August. Fashion Week hits the Danish capital from the 7th to the 11th of August, creating an even more stylish vibe than usual. Stay at the design-led Audo, which houses a thoroughly unconventional ‘hotel’, as well as a concept store and restaurant. When it comes to eating, make your way through Frederik Bille Brahe’s stable of restaurants and cafes, such as Atelier September and Apollo Bar.

East Kent, UK
Kent’s east coast and its surrounding countryside are becoming a magnet for stylish restaurants and stays, making it the ideal weekend break from London in high summer. Updown Farmhouse is a restaurant with rooms just outside of Arty Deal that should be top of your list. Dinner is served under vines bulging with grapes in its incredibly pretty restaurant, in the gardens of a rambling 17th-century Kentish farmhouse — and after, you can simply roll up to your bedroom. On your way back to the capital, continue the gastronomic journey and make a lunch stop at The Pig at Bridge Place, just outside Canterbury.

Bregenzerwald, Austria
The Alps have particular magic in the summer months, and this August, we are looking towards Austria’s Bregenzerwald region. Here, you are embraced by a particular landscape, where soft swathes of forest and scented meadows roll with the hills beneath them. Embedded in the heart of the three-country corner around Lake Constance, Fuchsegg Eco Lodge is our first port of call. Inspired by the mountain huts typical of the area, these six standalone huts and chalets are the perfect jumping-off point for biking; as well as a magical yoga setting and first-class wellness facilities.

Bernese Alps, Switzerland
Also known as the Bernese Oberland, the Bernese Alps are found in the west of Switzerland. In the summer months, the area is a paradise for advanced hiking. Stay at Hotel Drei Berge, which perches at 1638 m on a cliffside facing the Three Bernese Mountains. Its Swiss brasserie is a comforting refuge for hikers after they’ve conquered the nearby peaks, with a well-traveled menu that takes inspiration from its home country, as well as Japan and Italy. Drei Berge is just across the valley from two of our other favorites, Bellevue des Alpes and Jungfrau Wengeralp, so you can easily combine them. Salina, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy
White Lotus ensured Sicily’s popularity as a Mediterranean destination this summer, but you can still escape the crowds on the lesser-known Aeolian Islands, a cluster of volcanic isles off its northern coast. Our choice this August is the picturesque, lush Salina, which has spectacular views over Stromboli, Panarea, and the endless Aeolian Sea. Bed down at Principe di Salina, a characterful jewel of a hotel with just 14 rooms, each with a private terrace overlooking the glittering sea below. It would be tempting to just stay put, lounging by the pool, before dinner cooked by chef Silvana — except for dishes such as pesce spade, arancini with pistachio, and polpettine.

Antiparos, Greece
A tiny slither of an island in the center of the Cyclades, Antiparos has a laid-back vibe that’s ideal for those in search of a classic, family-friendly Greek island experience. Spend your days boating around the island, or exploring its secret beaches, stopping off to refuel at its casual tavernas such as Peramataki near Soros Beach. There are still rooms available in August at the boutique Beach House, which sits in the calm Apantima Bay on the eastern side of the island. From here, after a day lounging on its comfy sofas, you can head into the Chora for drinks at Bar Bardot, staying into the small hours.
