Wagrain, Salzburg Alps, Austria

Bergdorf Prechtlgut

In a picturesque mountain village, Bergdorf Prechtlgut offers 80 lavish chalets perched on a hillside just outside Wagrain, a family-friendly winter ski resort in Salzburg’s Pongau region. In this idyllic region, nature is queen. The chalets are just in front of the Wagrain Grafenbergbahn lift station, so you can be first on the slopes in the morning. Thanks to the Panorama Link, this resort is joined with Flachau and Alpendorf to form the wider Salzburger Sportwelt area—part of the vast Ski Amadé region —and has 310 kilometers of slopes, as well as an impressive matrix of langlauf (cross-country skiing routes). Our pick is the Mountain Chalet, which is ideal for couples or a young family and is designed like a traditional Alpine hut. There is a cozy living area centered around a large fireplace, a giant bathtub, and two double bedrooms—plus its own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Foodies will love that it is only a hop, skip, and jump from the restaurant too. Bergdorf Prechtlgut’s rustic restaurant and bar serves up traditional Salzburger and Austrian dishes. Your host, Manuel, will even accompany you to dinner, meeting you in the bar first, armed with charm and stories of the region. For other evenings, there are sizzling meat and fish fondue nights and tastings in the Wine Lounge; in the afternoons, the sun terrace is just the place to lounge after a morning on the piste. We love that the chalets have access to a room-service-style well-being program, including alpine-inspired wellness baths, massages, and meditation with your hostess, Carina.

Villandro, South Tyrol, Italy

Felder Alpin

Set in an 11th-century farmhouse in the village of Villanders, Felder Alpin combines rustic comfort with the trimmings of modern luxury and a sustainable mindset. Sitting at an altitude of 1,200 meters, the private lodge has breathtaking views of the surrounding Dolomites and is a short distance from Bolzano, the beautiful capital of South Tyrol, Alpe di Villandro, Europe’s second largest alpine mountain pasture, and the Gardena and Villnöss Valleys. The building’s original thatched roof, bone structure, and character have been left to sing, while local craftsmen have put reclaimed wood and smoked oak to use to create its new incarnation. There are three bedrooms with supremely comfortable Simmons box spring beds dressed in Pierre Frey fabrics; a traditional South Tyrolean parlor with a farm oven, and a relaxation area covered in handmade Moroccan cushions that is just perfect for cozy evenings inside, listening to music or reading books from the library wearing a pair of the lodge’s slippers made from local sheep’s wool. There is a smoked oak Finnish sauna and a hay bath for relaxing—just like South Tyrolean farmers used to do after a long day’s work—and a wellness shower to cool back down. There is a typical farmhouse kitchen, but you will have your own private chef to prepare delicious breakfasts and dinners in the stube (in-room). Plus, there’s a very pleasing Secret Cellar with regional wines and selected spirits. The owner Tom, your mountain guide Matthias, and the manager Claudia will make your stay as dreamlike and adventurous as possible—with the lodge’s Pinzgauer on hand to chauffeur you around. For those who wish to arrive by air, there is a helipad.
